Tamara de Lempicka (was born Maria Gorska, May 16, 1898, Warsaw, Poland - Died March 18, 1980 Cuernavaca, Mexico). Of all the artists pursuing the style "Arts Decoratifs", one of the most memorable was Tamara De Lempicka. This glamorous Polish-born artist was at the forefront of Paris' Art Deco movement (a classical, symmetrical, rectilinear style that reached its high point between 1925-1935), painting haunting, coolly colored portraits of the rich and famous cafe society. She is best known for her Art Deco-styled portraits of sexy, bedroom-eyed women in stylish dress and haunting poses. Few accomplished artists embody the content of their work to the same extent as Tamara de Lempicka. Her highly stylized paintings, which combine elements of Cubism and Realism, capture the sophisticated world in which she moved. Lempicka's clear, strong style, sometimes called Soft Cubism.
